Daily activities of the owner of a 20 acre Organic
Farm plus
observations, notes, and comments on a wide variety of topics.
Patched a leak on the roof of our farm house.
Ordered seeds for this year's planting.

Moved the tomato plants that I started on January 16 from a 72 cell flat to an 18 cell flat. Although the tops of the seedlings looked good, the root system was weak - they should be left in the 72 cell flat for a fourth week next time.
Winter Writing One of the good thinks about winter in Michigan is that it gives me a chance to do some writing. During the rest of the year, the challenges of the farm and other aspects of life keep me on the move. During those times, I jot down quick notes and make journal entries. During the winter, I can revisit those notes, and to a certain extent, relive the summer when I wrote the note as I expound upon the note here in my Web Log. I used to dread winters - February can be especially brutal. But now, I rather look forward to the writing opportunity. The weather is the same - just a change in mental attitude.
Cut down a tree and stacked the firewood.
Cut down another tree and stacked the firewood.
Pruned the trees on the walking path around the farm. Mostly removed sucker growth and any low branches that would smack me in the face when driving around on Miss Daisy.
Worked on taxes for our home and business in preparation for a meeting with our Bookkeeper.
Did more work on taxes.
| 13 | Added 3 more sprayers to the
basement greenhouse watering system. Extracted ornamental sunflower seeds from their seed heads in preparation for planting in May. |
Met with the Bookkeeper and got our taxes done.

Picked up taxes from the Bookkeeper (I REALLY like doing taxes with computer support and the e-file process!)
Started a variety of ornamental grasses in flats in the basement greenhouse.
Updated my Web Log.
Sent out a Newsletter to the people registered in our Guestbook Program.
Completed a 5 week tomato growth test that began on January 16. The plants look great and that allows me to schedule starting the seeds in the spring 5 weeks before I intend to sell them on our Roadside Farm Stand.
Took down an owl nesting box from a tall pine tree I plan on cutting down and installed it on a smaller pine tree. Much to my surprise, there was a screech owl sleeping in the box (I guess the owl was REAL surprised too!).
Today was a very special day in my life. My son and his wife gave birth to our first grandchild - a girl.

Trimmed some of the 300+ trees in the walking path around our farm.
Worked on the floor of the outside greenhouse by mixing concrete and filling the small gaps between the 4" thick floor blocks and the perimeter foundation blocks.
Trimmed more trees around the farm.
Trimmed more trees around the farm.
Used some leftover greenhouse plastic film and made a warming enclosure inside out outside greenhouse. We can keep this enclosure warm without having to heat the entire greenhouse. Moved all the onion flats from the basement greenhouse to the warming enclosure. This made room in the basement so the rosemary sprouts could be re-potted from 72 cell flats to 18 cell flats.
