Daily activities of the owner of a 20 acre Organic Farm plus
observations, notes, and comments on a wide variety of topics.

1 Prepared for the St. Joseph Farmers Market.

Put up bird netting over the blueberry bushes.   Roto tilled the pepper plants.

2 Worked as a vendor at the St. Joseph Farmers Market.

Adjusted the bird netting over the blueberry bushes.  Set up a sprinkler system for the hardening off area.

Watered the farm.

3 Watered the farm.
4 Watered the farm.   Potted more lavender and basil plants.
5 Roto tilled the winter squash, sunflowers, and 2 rows of tomatoes.  Started 1 flat of basil.

Got 0.3" of rain (hoo-ray!)

6 Finished roto tilling tomato plants.  Potted coleus plants and pepper plants leftover from the farm planting.
7 Cut the side out of an old water tank to make a device for digging potatoes.  I currently dig them one at a time with a shovel.  It seemed like a curved metal plate (the side of the water tank) being pulled by the tractor like a scoop bucket could unearth the potatoes and then if the dirt and potatoes went over a grating - the potatoes should end up laying on top of the dirt.

Watered the farm.

8 Prepared for the St. Joseph Farmers Market.

Tried the metal potato digger I had made.   The metal bent when I encountered an old stump of a grape plant underground.   (back to the drawing board)

Watered the farm.

16 Roto tilled peppers and tomato plants.
17 Disked the pumpkin field and sunflower fields.

Make a small table for the Roadside Farm Stand.

18 Tended the tomato plants.

Painted the base for the Farm Stand Table and anchored it in place.

19 Mowed the paths around the farm as well as the onions and potatoes.
20 Mowed the Grapes-NE Field, the Fairway, and around the fields.  The Grapes-NE field had been planted in cantaloupes but the extended drought did them in (this was a field I decided not to water with city water).  I'll plow the field under and try to grow a late crop of cukes and pickles.

We got 1.25" of rain (wow!!)

21 Dug potatoes for a special order.

Planted 3 rows of ornamental sunflowers and 1 row for seed heads.

We got 0.15" of rain.

22 Prepared for the St. Joseph Farmers Market.

Planted 7 more rows of sunflowers for seed heads.  Plowed and disked Grapes-NE for a late planting of cukes.  Roto tilled a second planting of cukes and pickles.

23 Worked as a vendor at the St. Joseph Farmers Market.

Started tending the 500 pepper plants.  We got 0.2" of rain.

24 Added cukes to the Farm Stand.

Tended pepper plants.

Moved the Japanese beetle traps from being inside the blueberry bushed to a brush pile adjacent to them.

25 Finished tending the 500 pepper plants.  Started tending the 700 tomato plants.

We got 0.15" of rain.

26 Delivered large tomato plants for a special order.  Planted leftover tomato plants in the Tomato Field.

0.85" of rain.

27 Cut weeds in cuke and squash fields at locations where where no seeds germinated.
28 Disked and dragged Grapes-NE Field and planted 1-1/2 row of late pickles and cukes.
29 Prepared for the St. Joseph Farmers Market.

Planted remaining rows of late pickles and cukes.

30 Worked as a vendor at the St. Joseph Farmers Market.

Worked on the Trailer for the car and set up a system of shelves designed to hold our yellow picking tubs.  We will be able to carry much more produce to the Farmers Market by carrying things in a standard sized container and spacing the shelves accordingly.

Started roto tilling pepper plants.  Watered the sprouting seeds in the sunflower fields.

31 Finished roto tilling to pepper plants.  Watered the new cuke seedlings.

We only got 3.5" of rain for the entire month.
