Daily activities of the owner of a 20 acre Organic
Farm plus
observations, notes, and comments on a wide variety of topics.
| 1 | Cleaned out the basement
greenhouse which has fluorescent lights. Brought in bags of potting soil and got
ready to start seeds. The basement greenhouse is 8x8ft and 7ft tall. It is a
frame made with 2x2 lumber and covered with plastic. Inside there are shelves,
fluorescent lights, a water tank, and a small heater. Started seeds for onions, butterfly bush, lavender, and rosemary. |
| 2 | Started seeds for rhubarb, onions, and eggplant. Started the daily watering of seeds and sprouts. |
| 3 | |
| 4 | |
| 5 | Placed the material order to build a 12x16ft greenhouse |
| 6 | |
| 7 | |
| 8 | |
| 9 | |
| 10 | The material for the greenhouse was delivered. Started moving material behind garage to construction site. |
| 11 | Finished moving greenhouse materials behind garage. Moved our covered utility trailer to the constructions site and set it up for construction tools. |
| 12 | Laid out and leveled the perimeter foundation blocks for the greenhouse. I'm using 8x16" 4" thick solid concrete blocks |
| 13 | |
| 14 | |
| 15 | Built the north greenhouse wall - left laying on its side. I'm not using any nails on the greenhouse - I pre-drill a hole and use power screws for everything. |
| 16 | |
| 17 | |
| 18 | |
| 19 | I shipped an order for catnip mice to Nigeria. Knowing that Nigeria had a bad reputation for international business, I made some phone calls to verify that the credit card was valid and had been issued by a UK bank (reasonable for that part of the world). Although the transaction correctly posted to my bank account, it was eventually reversed when the true owner of the card found their card info had been stolen. |
| 20 | Heavy rains all day. |
| 21 | Built a Web site for a nearby Lavender farm. For a quick-easy Web site, I thought it looks very good. It's at : http://www.qtm.net/~lavenderhillfarm/ if you want to check it out. |

| 23 | |
| 24 | Assembled the east wall for the greenhouse. Laid it on its side. |
| 25 | Assembled the west wall for the greenhouse. Laid it on its side. Started digging in the foundation blocks and setting them level. |
| 26 | Finished setting the foundation blocks for the west wall - started working on the south wall. |
| 27 | Set the greenhouse foundation blocks for the east wall and finished the south wall. |
| 28 | Set the greenhouse foundation blocks for the north wall. Laid out and drilled the holes for the foundation anchors. |
| 29 | 55' day (gotta like that for late February!) Lifted foundation blocks which had been drilled for anchors. Used a post hole digger and dug 6" wide holes 28" deep. Set 1/2" diameter anchors in concrete in the holes and re-set the foundation blocks. |
