Chapter 9

Why Do You Believe?

"Do you believe the world is becoming a better place to live? Are the people of the world using the life that God has given them to do good things? Or are they chasing selfish or self-serving goals? Or just existing instead of living? The ancient writings of the religions of the world are not ‘wrong’, but we cannot ignore the world around us. There is nothing in any of your documents which describe me or the events which are unfolding around you. You may think you can find passages which suggest these times, but there are none. This is part of God’s message to you. You must guard against ignoring the present and the future for the sake of worshiping the past. Also, guard against worshiping the words instead of living what the words mean."
"Look around you." Adam gestured toward the blue sky overhead. "God is trying to get your attention. Show the people you lead how to live the life God has made possible. Get them motivated to make the world a better place. Show them the value of being honest in everything they do and say. Get them to understand the value in helping others. Lead them to see the wonder of God in nature and in natural processes. Open their hearts to the satisfaction of doing the right thing, even if nobody notices. Let them see the potential they have with their life."
The crowd sat in silence, pondering the words they just heard. "Your ancient holy books were written in times very different from today. Many of those who assembled the manuscripts had non-God agendas - to control people - to establish favored positions and titles - to leverage wealth away from people. "
"Ancient people could not comprehend what we understand today - the immense amounts of time for the universe to become what we see today - the vast distances in space - the details of natural forces and physics. Much of what was worshiped in the past is understood today in terms of natural laws and dynamic processes. That does not prove that there is no God, but it does allow us to better understand the world we live in. We have graduated from a world where it was believed God was acting directly to cause what was observed. Today we might attribute to God the fundamental forces of nature and the grand designs behind the processes we have identified. I doubt that your holy books represent the world that we understand today."
"Look to your ancient books as stepping stones. They got you to this point in time - but are they the best you can pass along to future generations?"
