Adam and Pastor Kanger stepped out of the cabin about 7:00 Tuesday morning. There were at least 30 people left over from the night before. Some were in the parking lot, going and coming for breakfast. Most of the rest were near the remnants of the large campfire.A relief TV crew had just taken over for the duo who had the night watch. Adam and the Pastor leaving the cabin caused them to drop their morning papers, grab their gear, and cautiously stalk their prey.Eight of the picnic tables had been moved near the fire. A few people were still sleeping here and there - some in sleeping bags or covered with blankets - some just stretched out on a bench or on the beach. Adam walked to the largest group near the fire. One of the people there recognized Adam."How about a cup of coffee, Mr. Sampson?" asked the man."Dont mind if I do" responded Adam with a smile. All the people suddenly became quiet. Most tried to acknowledge Adam with something that was a combination of a bow, a salute, and a wave. All realized the awkwardness of their efforts.Adam sat down and accepted the cup of coffee which was poured from a large thermos. Everyone gathered around Adam and had a seat on the picnic tables or on the ground. The TV crew split, with one working a camera in the background and the other getting closer with a microphone. They tried their best to blend in with the crowd and not disturb the moment."Have you ever considered what all goes into the creation of a simple cup of coffee?" asked Adam, rather rhetorically. After a short silence one of the children present answered in a shy voice "It comes from coffee beans.""Thats right" said Adam. "A coffee plant must grow and mature. The plant combines the energy from the sun with the nutrients in the ground. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the atmosphere. Growing things like that are among Gods great gifts. The beans must be harvested and dried. They are shipped from where they are grown to our country and packaged and distributed to a store." |
