Chapter 2

A New Beginning

It was just after daybreak. The rain had stopped but the thick clouds remained. Everything was wet from the rain of the night before. Colors were varying shades of gray.
Adam was on the ground where he fell during the storm. His clothes were soaked, muddy, and a bit singed from the lightning. He started to move but every part of his body hurt. He moaned in response.
Although he had not opened his eyes yet or lifted his head, he thought he could hear singing. Yes, there were definitely the sounds of many voices off in the distance.
Adam fought back the pains of his aching body and sat up. At the same time he managed to open his eyes slightly as if the morning’s dim light was too bright. His head felt like a swarm of bees were stinging from the inside. He was wet, sitting next to a car he didn’t recognize, and he was outside. He struggled to remember how he had come to this place. He could summon no answers. Still there was this singing again which seemed to be calling him.
As he stood up, Adam lost his balance, staggered to the car and rested his elbows on the hood. He remained there for a moment and tried to look around. The singing had stopped. He struggled to clear his head and remember who he was or where he should go. No luck.
Suddenly the singing started again. It was coming from the direction of the resort by the lake. Adam decided to go and have a closer look.
Adam tried to walk from the car, but his legs were weak and his balance was erratic. He went from tree to tree along the road, using each tree as a crutch to keep him from falling.
Eventually, Adam could see some people assembled on the beach of the resort. They weren’t singing now, but nobody else was out at that time of day. Adam paused to watch from the base of a tall pine. The group was mostly teenagers and there was one adult. They were all wearing white robes.
As Adam watched, the adult walked out in the water and began talking to the young people. Adam couldn’t hear the words, and moved a couple trees closer.
