Chapter 17

A Very Lost Sheep

As morning broke the O’Connor residence was busy. Adam and the pastor were collecting their things and some of the friends arrived to sample Margaret’s brunch. The police continued to keep the masses at a distance.
With everyone ready, they got in their cars and started off. The crowd around the estate quickly faded away and many went to their cars in an attempt to follow Adam. As usual, several media groups were ready when Adam’s group left and kept up a close pursuit.
The group found their way to the projects where Mabel lived and parked their cars. Adam took the lead and walked toward a tall apartment building across the street. As Adam neared the front of the building, a man who was leaning against a parked car approached.
"Hey! What you want, man?" demanded the character, attempting to block Adam’s way.
"I have come for Jamahl Washington" responded Adam.
"Maybe Jamahl don’t want to see you!" answered the man sarcastically. Some of the media had arrived, but the police contingent was not to be seen yet.
"I have come to free Jamahl from his wicked ways and to set the neighborhood free" retorted Adam with defiance. Adam then side stepped the man and headed for the front door of the complex.
In response to Adam’s side step the character pivoted the opposite way and pulled a gun from his jacket. The character had not quite extended his shooting arm when he suddenly dropped the gun in a patch of grass next to the sidewalk. His knees gave out on him and he fell on his back in the middle of the sidewalk. On his face was a look of terror. His hands clutched his chest. There was a gasp of horror from the group.
Adam turned to see him. "In your attempt to take my life, you have taken your own instead."
Adam then looked toward the group which was following him "Look upon God’s power over man! The doctors will find his heart has exploded. Come, let’s bring the light of God to his friends in this place!" Adam turned and walked up the front steps and entered the building. The others paused for a few moments, then carefully stepped around the lifeless body and followed Adam inside.
