"Its fine with me" answered Adam. "Id like the opportunity to meet your friends and neighbors."Adam and the pastor placed their things in the rooms which had been readied for them. Before long, they were at the dinner table with the friends and neighbors the doctors wife had invited. As they were served the first course, everyone looked around nervously, wondering if someone should say a prayer. Finally the doctors wife spoke "Mr. Sampson, would you like to say grace?""Please, proceed with the meal like you always do. If you usually say a prayer, go ahead and do so. If you usually dont, go ahead with the meal. You wont offend me in either case" responded Adam.Margaret offered a rather makeshift prayer, trying to convince Adam and her guests that she did that all the time. Adam grinned toward the pastor as the forced prayer was easily recognized as something the OConnors usually didnt do.Most of the dinner was spent with Adam asking the friends and neighbors about their families, professions, and their favorite vacation spots.Interspersed with this light conversation, Adam remarked as each course was served about the plants and animals which had to die to provide the meal. He then posed rhetorical questions to the group if they were doing things with their lives that could justify the deaths they had paid for - were they worthy of the nourishment they were taking.Adam also offered as one of Gods great gifts the digestive system - able to convert energy from food into energy we can control. Adam remarked that in the days to come, people would experience other forms of energy conversion. Everyone exchanged puzzled facial expressions, but nobody was brave enough to ask Adam what he was talking about. As well educated individuals, they didnt want to ask any dumb questions. Unfortunately, they let an educational opportunity slip by.After dinner they got up and moved to the living room. |
