When the sun rose on Monday, many people did not. A burning sensation in their right knee brought them out of their deep sleep. The pain would not allow them to rest. All ointments and other treatments were of no use. The leg was useless within an hour. The reactions of people varied. Some took stock of their lives and pledged to make a new start. Others reacted in disbelief. They rationalized innocence of their past actions, since everyone else was doing the same thing. The everyone elses of the world sat in similar paralysis - both of the body and of the mind. Thousands of people called hospitals and clinics. Nothing could be done.Adam and Pastor Kanger were summoned from their sleep by the moaning sounds from Jeff Gladding. In the small apartment, it was clear that God was getting Jeffs attention. A couple of lights were switched on."My knee is on fire!" exclaimed young Jeff."Any idea why?" asked Adam who suddenly looked not to Jeff but to Pastor Kanger who had been sleeping on the sofa. The pastor was flexing his knee, and in realizing that he felt no symptoms, he let forth a sigh. Adam reached over and gave the pastor a couple of congratulatory pats on the back."TV reporting is very competitive" answered Jeff. "Sometimes I stretch some facts to make more of a story than was really there.""Is that all?" asked Adam."Well . . . ouch" Jeff obviously didnt like the pain "I usually stretch some of the numbers on my income tax returns.""Is THAT all?" asked Adam, glancing toward the pastor."I think Ill put on some coffee" remarked Arthur. "You two keep chatting.""No, theres lots more!" confessed Jeff as he seemed to have a clear list of all the wrongs he had done. For the next 45 minutes, Jeff told of faked sick days at work, taking coffee from the office pot without paying, and on it went. The list seemed so long that Arthur and Adam looked toward each other several times and shook their heads slightly. |
