Chapter 12

The Departure

It was mid morning on Sunday. Some thin clouds covered the resort for the first time in a week. Adam and the pastor loaded some of their things in the trunk of the pastor’s car. One person from the morning’s crowd offered to help, which prompted others nearby to do the same. The car was loaded in record time.
Adam walked over to the collection of microphones for a farewell press conference. He turned sideways to address several of the local inhabitants who were standing by their cabins. "Residents of Long Lake Resort, I appreciate the tolerance and friendship you have shown over the years and especially in the last week. This place has been the starting point of something very special for me - I hope you have become equally inspired."
Adam then turned to face the cameras in front. Supplemental lighting had been turned on to brighten the dull colors of the cloudy morning. "Please be careful tomorrow" Adam cautioned. "Many of you will lose the ability to use your legs for the day. Don’t engage in any activities where you might endanger yourself. As I have said before, if you will be affected, it will begin as a burning sensation in your right knee. If you start to feel that sensation, your leg will be paralyzed within an hour. Have a plan to get somewhere where you will be safe. Those of you who are not affected, please do what you can to help the others."
Adam continued, "Everyone needs to think beyond the effects they are observing to remember the WHY behind the effects. Those who will lose the use of their legs are in some way betraying the trust of their fellow man. If you are among the affected, look in your heart and you will know where your shortcomings are. Also remember those things that God is bringing to your attention are aspects of your behavior today and in the past - it need not be part of your future if you decide to change your ways."
John Turner, who had lost his ears the Monday before, asked the next question. John was wearing a hat and had the collar on his trench coat in the raised position to hide his disfigurement. "How exactly will this happen as the sun will rise at different times around the world?"
Adam seemed a bit surprised to see John Turner, then smiled warmly. Adam got up from his seat at the microphones and walked slowly over to John. Adam had never done that before in any of his interviews. Adam reached out his hand to shake John’s. John reluctantly extended his own hand. Adam took hold of John’s hand in the handshake position, but only held it. Adam then slowly moved his left hand to cover the back side of John’s right. The crowd was hushed in silence as John handed his microphone to a fellow correspondent. John reached his left hand toward Adam’s, but stopped short. John then continued by placing his left arm around Adam in a hug. Tears came to John’s eyes.
