Chapter 1

Tragedy

They hurried to the squad car and sped off toward town.
"What can you tell me about the accident?" asked Adam.
"Well, it looks like your wife was driving back from town and going through the cut in the hills leading to the south end of your resort. With all the rains, it seems there was a rock slide. An oncoming car swerved to miss the rocks and forced your car off of the road. The car went down the bank a ways."
"Were they hurt bad then?"
The officer kept his eyes on the road. "I can’t tell you."
"Were they killed?" Adam asked with a hushed voice as if he was afraid of the answer he might get.
"Listen, I can’t tell you - regulations, you know. We’ll be at the hospital in five minutes - just hang on."
It was almost dark as the squad car rounded the turn into the hospital parking lot and pulled up to the entrance with the ‘Emergency’ sign. Adam got out of the car and dashed in through the large entrance door into the waiting room.
"I’m Adam Sampson and I need to find my wife Susan" Adam announced to a trio of women in white who initially seemed indifferent. "She was in a traffic accident today with our daughter Becky."
"Oh dear" replied the one who seemed to be in charge. "Please come with me."
Adam was lead to a vacant examining room. The nurse said "Please wait here. I’ll get Doctor Jeffries."
"Wait!" demanded Adam. "Where is my wife and daughter?"
The nurse squeezed out the door which closed quietly behind her.
After several minutes which hung like hours in the silence of the room, the door swung open. "I’m Doctor Jeffries."
