Be sure to visit your library or bookstore for more information on photography.

Have you ever thought about the difference between a snapshot and a photograph?  In most cases, the snapshot lives up to its name - something very quick - done in a "snap."  On the other hand, the photograph usually starts with somebody who understands the technical elements of composition.  They also understand their equipment and recognize the wide array of choices they have in a particular setting.  They are able to combine their knowledge of composition and equipment to capture an image which has a purpose - a theme.   Others seeing this image usually pause to enjoy it.

Are you a photographer or a snapshooter?  If you want to be a photographer, you will need to learn some fundamentals of composition.   You will need to learn your equipment and know its abilities and limitations.   You will also need to think about each image you capture in terms of theme.   Although there isn't a clear line separating snapshooters and photographers, it may take considerable effort on your part to make the transition.  Most importantly, if you're not willing to put in some effort to learn photography, you can probably save yourself some money by not buying a more expensive camera - you will only succeed in having more expensive snapshots - and probably become frustrated in the process.

This section of the Web site has been structured for those who want to take a few steps in the direction of photography.  I would recommend printing our page of "Top 10 Photographic Fundamentals."  This should serve as a quick self-checking list before you attempt your next photograph.   The Web page on "Know Your Equipment" is another good page to print.   It has been structured for you to fill in information which might be useful to you.   From there, I'd suggest checking the text with the images in the Premium Note Card section.   You should find a paragraph with most images which describes the technical elements as well as the theme.

I hope this Web site is useful in helping you learn the fundamentals of photography and you are able to see steady improvement with each roll of film.   If you're comfortable being a snapshooter, that's fine too.  I think you will enjoy photography more by having a clear understanding of who you are - and having realistic expectations for the results you can achieve.

Good Luck! - Mike
