Who wants to get off the train at St. Joe in February? Not nearly as many as would stop during the summer. St. Joseph and Berrien County often find themselves at the center of lake-effect snow bands. When conditions are just right (or just wrong!) the snow can really pile up. This photo was taken on February 16. PS: More snow was predicted for later that night!
This was a fun photo to set up. It began with selecting one of the few winter days with a blue sky. Next, I liked the interplay of the railroad "Stop!" signal with all the snow. To me, the signal was telling Mother Nature to stop with all the snow. I tried to balance the signal in the lower right with the covered pavilion in the upper left. The stairs form a leading line that connects those two elements. The snow was important too - if you tried this same photo in summer, the grass of the hillside would tend to blend things together. The snow hiding the grass allows the structural elements to be more dominant.
