What
started out to be a gentle winter, became one of the worst in February. The rust on the
side of the lighthouse, the pile of ice at the pier head light, and the floes of ice in
the river attest to the harshness. Somehow, the black superstructure seems to be standing
on its tippy toes ~ trying to escape the ravages of the winter.
A significant part of
quality winter photos is good lighting. In this photo, I waited for all the strong weather
to end. When a day came along between storms that had I good amount of blue sky, I bundled
up and went for a CAREFUL walk on the south pier. I didnt walk to the very end, but
stopped when I saw the right relationship between the lighthouse, the river ice, and the
tiny bit of ice from the south pier in the lower left corner. That little bit of ice adds
to both depth of field and optical balance. |
