Singer Lake in Baroda, Michigan was captured at the point of transition from summer to autumn. The green cattails in the foreground and lilypads suggest some growing vegetation while the trees in the background have taken on their finest fall colors. The near shore the wind was still, allowing the mirrored water to show the rich blues of the north sky. The camera didn't record it, but the day had an earthy smell - as one of the last warm days of the year stirred aromas from fallen leaves underfoot.
The rule of thirds caused the lower 2/3 of the photo to be devoted to water. The cattails provided for foreground, the water midground, and the trees background. The cattails were positioned in the lower left to balance the section of sky in the upper right. A polarizing filter was used to achieve the best reflection in the water.
