This photograph of the St. Joseph, Michigan lighthouse was taken on a cold, windy November day when the strong winds were generating some enormous waves.
The photo makes use of leading lines to focus attention on the lighthouses. One leading line is achieved by the superstructure, the second by the drift wood on the beach. Depth of field was accomplished with the driftwood in the foreground, waves in midground, and the lighthouses in the background. A low camera angle was used to emphasize the height of the waves and I positioned myself so the driftwood was pointing toward the lighthouses. Notice the mostly cloudy sky . . . I had to wait until both the lighthouses and the driftwood were in full sun. As it turned out, the large waves in between were in a shadow - but that darkness added to their menacing look.
