I really liked the colors and textures of this scene - the shades of orange and black of the butterfly set against the greens and blacks of the background.
This was a good butterfly opportunity for me. Usually, before I get my thoughts collected on how I want the photograph to look, the butterfly has long gone. In this case the butterfly was just emerging - the wing tips had yet to unfold completely, so I had plenty of time to look things over. I went with a wide open aperture to achieve a shallow depth of field - this made the contrasting background out of focus and allowed the in-focus butterfly to dominate the scene.
