This photograph of the St. Joseph, Michigan lighthouse was taken in the summer of 1980. The Mount St. Helens volcanic eruption provided for some special coloring in the evening sky.
The photograph composition included a decision to emphasize the sky rather than the water, however, enough of the water was included to show how it took its color from the sky. The rule of thirds was employed to place each lighthouse on a 1/3 line. The superstructure connecting the two lighthouses also runs along a 1/3 line. With the camera on a tripod and a 135mm lens, I waited for the sky to darken enough so the lights would be visible but not so dark that the superstructure could not be seen. About 6 photographs were taken at this setting - some horizontal - some vertical. This was my favorite.
