This photograph captured the peace and solitude of a single fisherman in the still waters off the beach by the St. Joseph, Michigan lighthouses. Although the fisherman is alone, the lighthouses seem to be "watching" his actions. I remember when I was composing this photo, I would rather be the fisherman than the photographer.
The composition started with placing myself along a sand dune at the right height to have the fisherman between the two lighthouses - forming a triangle. The rule of thirds allocated only 1/3 to the sky which was only useful for a backdrop color. The real key to this photo was patience. Since I used slow speed film, I had to wait with the camera on a tripod until the fisherman paused to change his lure. Otherwise, his casting motion would have been a blur with my slow shutter speed.
