This kitten had just opened its eyes for the first time the day before. Its ears had not "unfolded" completely, its whiskers were still droopy, and yet it was already curious about the the world beyond its patch of warm sunlight.
Indoor photos like this can be a problem for some cameras (and photographers). I wanted the kitten to stand out on a field of black, so I used a manual exposure setting based on full sunlight. Some camera exposure control systems get confused when there is either large areas of black or white in the field of view. I used a high perspective to catch the facial expressions and to eliminate the chance for any background clutter to be visible.
