This was an interesting sunset. The interesting part was not the sun disappearing into the horizon, rather in a sunset sky which is typically filled with colors, the area between the tops of the trees looked black and white. The brightness of that area of the sky was significantly greater than the thicket of clouds which was engulfing the dying sun. The vertical lines of the trees visually connect the interesting sky with the beach and the sunset. The line of clouds about a third up also acts a line of demarcation between the bright (but colorless) sky and the darker (but more colorful) setting sun.
I was able find some trees along the beach which had the right separation to frame both the setting sun and the black & white area of the sky. The fast-moving clouds also served as a framing member. There were allot of things going on - the sun was setting quickly, clouds were moving, and the quality of light was rapidly changing. I took a couple of exposures as the sun became visible between the low clouds and the horizon. Then I watched between the trees as this clear area filled the space between the tree tops. Click. Maybe I was lucky. Maybe I was skillful. Probably some of each.
