This photograph always helps me to remember to slow down and enjoy all that can be enjoyed. On vacation, we found ourselves in what seemed like a foot race down the miles of hiking trails in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. When we stopped to catch our breath, I saw this branch from a birch tree in a sunlit patch of green with some type of red berries. It made me wonder how many other captivating arrangements of colors and textures we had zoomed by. After that, I tried to fully enjoy each place we visited, rather compete in some form of vacation marathon to hike every mile of every trail in the UP.
This was a good candidate for the 50mm lens on my SLR. I selected a perspective to run the birch branch diagonally and have the bright raw end to occupy an intersection of 1/3 lines. I squatted low enough and used an open aperture so the vegetation just a foot or so behind the berries would start to blur - adding a feeling of depth of field although the photo only covers about 2ft from front to back.
