Tahquamenon
Falls,
Upper Peninsula, Michigan |
|
|
Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is one of the most attractive
water falls in the Midwest. Although it's tucked away in the UP, it's readily accessible
and without encroachment from urban sprawl. There are excellent views of the falls
and areas where boats can be rented or the adventurous can wade along the shallow rocky
flats. Playing in the water was my favorite part (I reluctantly grow older, but I
refuse to grow up!).
This composition is a
good example of the photographic framing technique. The bank of flowers in the
foreground, the tree on the left, and the darkness at the top form a three-sided frame for
the waterfall. A medium-fast shutter speed was used - I didn't want to entirely
"freeze" the falling water with my fastest shutter speed - on the other hand, I
didn't want just a blur of water either. This was a mostly cloudy day, and once I
had the camera on the tripod with the view I wanted, I had to wait about 30 minutes for
the sun to come out. For the others on the trip, the 30 minute wait was pretty
boring - but they understood and enjoyed a snack during the ordeal. |
