In southwestern Michigan, two things we have in abundance are killdeer and asparagus. The vocal killdeer doesn't waste any time on building a nest, but the eggs on bare dirt are tough to see. This grouping of asparagus and eggs is a comparison of the young things from two vastly different kingdoms of nature - and yet their physical closeness hints that the concept of being young and growing are the same in every kingdom of nature.
This was a challenging photo. Optically, I used a short extension tube on a short telephoto lens and selected an angle which would place the eggs front right and the asparagus back left, getting both balance and depth of field. The tough part was struggling with a temptation to "clean up" the scene - remove all the vegetation so that only the asparagus and the eggs were in the field of view. In the end I decided against it, since the tufts of vegetation were part of the killdeer camouflage. I knew that many people would look at the photo and never see the eggs - I guess that's a compliment to Mrs. Killdeer's maternal skills.
