The real title for this photograph is "Death Is But A Part Of Life". In a cemetery setting, the maple in the background in losing its leaves - apparently dying. We know that the maple does not really die, but takes a winter's rest until it seems to be reborn in the spring. Consequently, this photograph suggests that human death may be similar to the maple tree - perhaps going through a phase of transformation rather than ceasing to exist.
This was a whiplash photograph. On vacation with the family, I saw this scene as we were driving down the highway. I set a new record for "the fastest turn off a highway" (my apologies to the passengers in the car). I walked around until I found a perspective where I could include a few headstones in the foreground and lead to the tree in the background. I liked this angle because the dark shadows on the headstones seemed to enhance the "death" theme and helped the tree stand out more as the focal point of the photo.
