While picking grapes one evening, I was struck by the setting sun behind the silhouette of the grape vines. It seemed like there was a natural relationship between the sun's energy and the bounty of the grape plant. The sunset was rather ordinary - not demanding any special attention. The grapes too were rather ordinary - any yet did a journeyman's job of producing juice and wine. It's probably time to taste our home made wine again (it's a wonder there's any left!).
The composition required a low camera position to orient the setting sun below the grapes and to eliminate some visual clutter which was on the horizon. I waited for the sun to set enough to take most of the brightness and color from the sky and yet provide enough light so the grapes could be seen as silhouettes. The clouds made the distant horizon dark and blended in the base of the grape plant - helping suggest the connection from sky to sun to clouds to earth to vegetation to fruit - then back to the sky.
