The rising moon is set against a clear sky and a group of farm buildings. The moonlight seems to be providing a gentle illumination of the farm - but the moon is on the wrong side to be casting a frontal light. Actually, the setting sun is providing the subtle lighting.
The composition decisions included devoting the upper 2/3 of the picture to the pure, deep dark blue of the sky - the lower 1/3 to the farm and moon. The moon was placed at the lower left intersection of 1/3 lines. Timing of this photo was tricky. I had to wait for the moon to rise and reach a good position with the farm buildings. All the while, the sun was setting, eliminating the frontal light of the farm - but also enhancing the dark blue of the east sky. Fortunately, there was enough sunlight when the moon reached a good position - and yet not too much light to allow the farm to dominate the moon. The idea was to achieve a balance between the two elements.
