Sunset Farm

This was one of those evenings when right after the sun went down, the sky's fleeting rays of light seemed to have every rich color on the artist's palette.   The wispy clouds seemed to dance across the sky, connecting one source of color to the next.  All of this against a clear horizon, but for the silhouette of a single barn - the sort of scene the people living in rural southwestern Michigan see often, and yet cherish each dazzling sunset as a wonder of nature.

The key to this composition was a recognition about a half hour before the picture was taken that the day's sunset was going to be something special.  I dropped what I was doing at home, grabbed my camera gear and headed down the nearby country roads.  I kept driving until I found a clear view of the west sky, then adjusted my position to place the barn in the lower right corner at the intersection of two 1/3 lines.  In the low light, I used a tripod to steady the camera.
