As I drive down the nation's highways, I enjoy looking for hawks patrolling the ditches and nearby fields. The hawks seem to always look neat and well dressed, as if they own the area they are watching. I can't remember seeing a hawk actually in the field attacking anything, but always looking good - watching from the nearest fence or tree. I think hawks have management potential.
This was a photo in the parking lot at the Sarett Nature Center in Berrien County, Michigan. The naturalist had several birds in the parking lot for some fresh air. I asked if this one could be moved a couple feet left, so I could get the post in the photo as well. The naturalist agreed. I selected this angle to take advantage of the side lighting which helped give a three dimensional feeling. I placed the hawk on the right 1/3 line and made sure his eye was at the intersection of the right and upper 1/3 lines.
