This was an interesting sunset where a section of the sky near the horizon was colored as if it were the churning interior of some thermonuclear furnace (actually, that's a fairly accurate description of the sun). The lone tree on the horizon seemed to be caught up in the "fire" - no leaves, and seemed to blend in with the colors of the inferno.
In contrast to the wide angle, panoramic sunset photographs, this one was done through a telephoto lens. I placed the horizon at the lower 1/3 line and tried several techniques to place something else in the photo besides the tree. With the camera on a tripod, I released the shutter. When I got my film back, it looked like the tree didn't need any other items since extras might detract from the "burning tree" theme. Actually, this is probably a photographic form of rationalization where every exposure taken is "special" and "what you really had in mind in the first place". (BS)
